Iqbal

The novel ‘Iqbal’ by Francesco D’ Adamo is loosely based on Iqbal Masih’s real life.

In Pakistan, thousands of children work long, grueling hours in inhumane conditions so that they can pay off the debt their family owes. The carpet factory, where this story is set, houses 20 children who receive one rupee for one day’s work.

The novel is narrated through the voice of Fatima, a girl who works in this carpet factory. Their master, Hussain Khan, oversees their work and, if the work done is sufficient, Khan erases a line of their slate. Each line represents one rupee, and all the lines on the slate are their debt. Hussain Khan is a mean master and terrifies the children No one is willing to stand up to him in fear of abuse and time in ‘the Tomb’. The tomb is a small room with no light, ventilation or rations. This all continues until the day Iqbal arrives.

Iqbal is a brilliant worker. He weaves the most complicated patterns in a short time. Young Iqbal is brave and stands up to Hussain Khan. Iqbal weaves one of the rarest and most beautiful carpets in the world – The blue Bukhara. All the children think that Iqbal lines will be erased because he is making Hussain Khan so much money. However, Iqbal believes that the lines will never be erased. Therefore, on the day that foreign buyers come to the factory, Iqbal purposely cuts the Blue Bukhara to pieces as an act of defiance. He is sentenced to four days in the tomb; regardless, it is a huge loss for Hussain Khan.

Daring Iqbal takes another huge risk; he runs away from the carpet factory. Hussain Khan and his friends search the city for the fugitive but fail to find him.

Meanwhile, Iqbal goes to the market to look for work, when he hears some men from the Bonder Labor Liberation Front of Pakistan speaking about how the Supreme Court has ruled that bonded labor was illegal. Hope sparks up in Iqbal. He grabs a pamphlet that the volunteers are handing out. Iqbal tells a police officer his story, and the officer takes him back to Hussain Khan. They are going to arrest Hussain Khan, when Khan bribes them with money and he is let off. Iqbal is sentenced to 6 days in the tomb. He comes out starved and sunburned, but alive.

Iqbal tells the rest of the children what happened in the city and shows them the flyer. However, none of them know how to read. Then, the children hear a strange voice, one they had never heard before. It turns out that Maria, a girl who they had always thought could never speak, can actually read. Over the course of a year, Maria teaches them how to read, and they can finally read the flyer. Iqbal memorizes the address and, during a large punch up, escapes.

A day later, Iqbal returns with Eshan Khan, the leader of the Bonded Labor Liberation Front of Pakistan and a magistrate. They arrest Hussain Khan, no matter how much he tries to bribe them with. The children are free and are taken to the headquarters of the Liberation Front.

Slowly, all the forced workers return to their families, except Iqbal, Fatima and Maria. They continue to work to stop bonded labor. However, the opposition has grown stronger and many people are throwing bricks and rotten tomatoes at the headquarters.

After a while, Iqbal is told he has won the Reebok “Youth in Action award”. Iqbal is invited to international locations to deliver speeches on child labor and bonded labor.

Soon after, Iqbal Masih is murdered in his village on Easter Sunday. His murderers have never been found.

Alex Rider: Eagle Strike

Book: Alex Rider: Eagle Strike

Author: Anthony Horowitz

My thoughts:

Sir Damian Cray is a peace activist, a socialist, an environmentalist and a former world-famous pop-star. Cray looks like a hero, but behind the scenes he is responsible for many murders; one instance is when he didn’t want a Japanese ship to kill whales, so he locked them in their own deep freezer.
Cray wants to destroy drugs. He believes that if you blow-up all the worlds poppy fields, heroin factories, and cocaine refineries, there won’t be any more drugs to sell. To do this he will go to any extent. Cray creates a company called CST (Cray Software Technology), which is supposedly making a video-game called Game- slayer. What no one knows is that the Game-slayer is just a cover up. What they actually are doing is hacking into the American nuclear program. Cray plans to launch 25 missiles to different drug-producing nations worldwide.
Alex Rider, a teenage superspy, suspects something is wrong. He goes to MI6, but they won’t listen. So he goes by himself and investigates. He figures out Cray’s plan, and steals a flash drive, that gives Cray all the codes to launch the missiles. Alex’s friend, Sabina, is kidnapped by Cray, and Alex is threatened to give the flash drive back, or else Cray will kill his friend. Alex returns it.
Cray takes Alex and Sabina and hijacks the Air-force One with the help of his trusty guards. But while taking off, Alex pushes Cray out of the door and Cray is shredded by the engine. Sabina ungently goes up to the control center, from where Cray has already launched the devastating nuclear the missiles, and blew them up. The world was saved from a tragedy, a nuclear fallout, and who knows what else?

Alex Rider :Stormbreaker

Book: Alex Rider: Stormbreaker

Author: Anthony Horowitz

My Thoughts:

Alex rider is an orphan who has grown up with his uncle, Ian Rider. Ian works for Royal & General, a bank. One night, Ian is killed in a car crash. All Ian Rider’s money and property is now controlled by Ian’s employer. However, Royal & General is not a bank; it is the Secret Operations Division of MI6.

Herod Sayle has invented a new computer, named Stormbreaker. It is amazing for learning any subject. He is planning to give a Stormbreaker to each school in Brittan. MI6 want to investigate this because they are suspicious about Herod Sayle’s intentions. So, MI6 send Ian Rider to investigate. He finds out some vital information, but is ambushed by Yassen Gregorovich, a contract killer. Alan Blunt, the head of the Secret Operations Division of MI6, now sends Alex to investigate further.

Alex goes under the name of Felix, a boy that won a competition that allowed him to go to Sayle Enterprises and test a Stormbreaker. He finds out that the Stormbreakers are filled with a deadly vapor of smallpox, which is genetically modified so it can kill a person in just under 10 hours. But, suddenly, he is an inch away from being eaten by a giant octopus. Alex uses a cream, which burns metal, to burn the rivets that held together the tank. Alex survives. He hops onto a plane and destroys the trigger that can start up the Stormbreakers. He is thanked profusely by the Prime Minister.

I really liked this book because there was so much action and gripping cliff hangers. I enjoyed this book a ton, and plan to read the next book in the series.

InkHeart

Title: InkHeart

Author: Cornelia Funke

My thoughts:

Inkheart is an engaging book about two people, Meggie and her father, Mo, who can read fictional characters and material objects out of books. Meggie’s mother disappeared into a book called Inkheart when Mo was reading to her. She was trapped into the story and three people came out: Basta, Capricorn and Dustfinger. Basta and Capricorn are villains in the book, with ink black hearts, and Dustfinger is a side character.

Basta and Capricorn love this new world, but Dustfinger wants to go back to his inky black home. This world is too fast for him. Basta and Capricorn employ a reader, named Darius. He had to read out all Capricorn’s maid servants and guards from Inkheart. By that time, Capricorn has already built a village for him and his men. Now, they want to burn all copies of Inkheart so there is no trace of their original world. But, Mo has the last copy of the book …

This is an amazing book and is very interesting. It has a creative plot developed in imaginative detail. The way Cornelia Funke has built the suspense is fascinating.

Overall, I would give this book a 5 star rating because there were no boring bits, each and every bit was interesting.
